Roof Damage 101: How to Know It's Time for a Repair

Do you have a damaged roof? When roof damage isn’t immediately causing a major problem, it tends to be “out of sight, out of mind” and eventually become a real problem.

If you don’t know how to repair a damaged roof, you need to hire a professional as soon as possible before the problem grows. A small bit of damage now can turn into a costly project later.

If you’re unsure whether or not it’s time for a repair, we want to offer some advice. Keep reading for a few sure signs of roof problems that mean a roof repair is on the horizon.

Debris In Your Gutters

When you clean out your gutters, do you find unusual debris?

This isn’t like the standard natural debris that shows up in gutters, such as pine cones, pine needles, sticks, and leaves. This feels almost like soft concrete or hardened clay and it may leave color on your hands.

It’s possible that this is a result of your shingles cracking or disintegrating. Even if you can’t see the cracks on the roof itself yet, the debris is falling down the roof and into your gutters.

Stains On The Ceiling

Have you been noticing the gradual expansion of stains on your ceilings? The stains are probably a light brown color with the edges darker than the center. At first, the stain usually starts small, but then it gradually grows larger. To make matters worse, a damp ceiling results in a mold problem.

Light In The Attic

If you have an attic, then you know that it should be pitch-black when the lights aren’t on. Your attic should be completely enclosed and insulated, meaning that light from the indoors shouldn’t come in unless you have a window.

When you can see beams of light through the ceiling, that means that there’s a problem with your roof. If light can get through, pests and water can get through as well.

Higher Electric Bills

Has it been costing you more and more money to keep your home warm or cool? You know your rates aren’t increasing, but somehow your bills keep going up each month.

When your roof is compromised, it lets air in and out. That means that it takes more effort from your furnace and air conditioner to keep your rooms temperate.

Darker Shingles

This one is harder to notice because it can develop over time. If you look at your roof, does its color match all over? Does it look the same as when you installed it?

Some color fading may be normal, but if you see darkened shingles on your roof, they may be holding onto moisture. This means it’s time for a replacement.
